Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment
PSEL Standard 4: "develop and support intellectually rigorous and coherent systems of curriculum, instruction, and assessment to promote each student's academic success and well-being."
"For teachers, as for students, the most effective evaluation comes from someone who sits beside us and helps us grow." ~ Carol Ann Tomlinson
As a teacher of identified gifted students - there is not set curriculum. We work from the goals set as an IEP team.
For the past two years, we have worked in a post-COVID19 world. This new reality has brought attention to our students' social-emotional needs as well as their learning needs. Because of this, we have added more social-emotional lessons to our advisory classes.
We have also seen a need to change our curriculum delivery in special education. I serve on the student services committee working to realign our learning centers to make them more effective.
Finally, I am part of a professional learning community in my school. As a member of this community, I engage in learning opportunities and discussions about best practices with colleagues from various departments three times a week.
Artifact 1
IEP Goals for students identified as gifted. To create these goals, I interview the student, gather input from teachers and parents, and work with administrators and even community members, when warranted, to help the student achieve their goal.
As evidence of my input gathering, I am the student input form I have used this year for the 50 students on my caseload.
Artifact 2
mySAEBRS is a FastBridge Assessment that students complete at every grade level each semester. Teachers also complete this as an evaluation tool for each student in their advisory.
The purpose of the mySAEBRS assessment is to identify students who are at risk of social emotional behaviors. Teachers use the data collected along with students grades, referrals, and observations to have conversations with the student, their grade level team, their parents, and when necessary may refer them to mental health resources.
This tool is just one facet of how we address social-emotional needs during our weekly advisory classes.
